Are photos more engaging?

With the rise of photo sharing sites like Pinterest and Instagram, I have been wondering whether or not photos are more engaging than other types of posts for social media.

According to an Infographic by Tamba, Pinterest will account for 40% of social media driven purchases by the end of this year alone. Pinterest receives 4 million daily unique visits and is quickly climbing the ladder of the most popular social media sites list, following power players Facebook in the number 1 spot and Twitter close behind in second.

Another fun network that is completely about showing off photos is Instagram. With the launch of the Android app back in April, the social sharing site has exploded. People can take a photo with their smartphone and choose from a ton of filters to make their photo look vintage, change the color scheme, blur or highlight within minutes. This network tends to be more popular with women but I'm slowly seeing more men creeping into my Instagram feed.

Photos on Facebook also tend to have the most Likes, Comments, and Shares (compared to other types of posts) and are overall one of the most engaging types of posts on Facebook.

Even uploading a photo to Twitter can increase click-throughs and re-tweets.

In my experience not only do photos have a higher engagement rate, but people tend to engage much faster and for longer periods of time than any other type of post, tweet, or pin.

People use photos to not only tell their story, but to show it. Photos are a simple and convenient way to display product features, entice interest, as well as share our company's story.

What about you? Do you see greater levels of engagement with photos you share than any other content? Give it a try. Snap a photo and upload it to your favorite social media site and see how many Likes, Pins or Re-tweets you get compared to other types of posts.
